What is Asphalt sealer and what does it do when applied?
Asphalt is a petroleum-based product and reacts with other petroleum-based products such as a vehicles oil or gas. Proper asphalt sealer acts as a temporary barrier to resist these products. Please note sealers typically reduce friction or anti-skid properties which in turn may make your driveway slippery.
How is sealer Applied?
Sealers are usually applied by spraying them through specialized equipment. This typically gives a more even coating and reduces puddling of the material. They can also be applied with rollers or squeegees .
Do I have to do anything to my Asphalt before I get it sealed?
Asphalt should be cleaned with a broom or air blower to remove debris/excess rocks, etc. before sealer is applied. This will give the sealer a clean surface to adhere to and produce a longer lasting finish. A good contractor will have this included in the application to ensure you are receiving a high quality finished product.
Why fill the cracks in your asphalt?
Cracking is one of the most common problems that occurs in asphalt pavement. Cracks allow moisture to penetrate the base material or the “foundation” of the structure. This typically causes premature failure due to softening of the base and frost penetration in the winter, creating movement in the asphalt. Crack filling is a good preventative measure to prolong the life expectancy of your asphalt Investment by sealing up the cracks and preventing premature damage.
